First impressions

The bookmark began as a strip of offcut watercolour paper. I rounded neither the corners nor the idea: a narrow leaf, a little lavender, and enough blank paper for the page to remain quiet. A test wash on the leftover edge helped me choose the colour.

Notes from the process

After the paint dried completely, I marked the ribbon hole away from the top edge and reinforced the back with a small paper circle. A soft ribbon is preferable to anything bulky that could press into the book. The finished sample measures roughly 5 by 18 centimetres.

The next page

To try a similar paper project, cut a strip, test your colours, paint lightly, and let it dry flat before adding the ribbon. Use a cutting mat and keep sharp tools away from the work area when finished. The illustration is an original placeholder for future process photographs.
