First impressions
The leaf on the bus seat was almost transparent. Its veins looked like a street plan for a very small city. I put it between two unused pages and forgot about it until the evening, when it fell out beside my shopping list.
Notes from the process
Attention is rarely dramatic. It is the decision to look once more at something we have already named. A leaf becomes interesting again when I stop calling it merely a leaf: this edge is broken, this stem bends, this brown is almost purple.
The next page
I drew the shape without lifting my pencil. The result was awkward and useful. It recorded a few minutes of looking, and that seemed a better purpose for the page than proving I could draw.
